Condict, Lewis, 1773-1862
Variant namesLewis Condict (1772-1862), a physician from Morristown, N.J. (Morris County), received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1794. Dr. Condict was a U.S. congressman (1811-1817, 1819-1833), the first president of the Morris and Essex Railroad (1835), and a trustee of the College of New Jersey (1827-1861).

Lewis Condict was born in Morristown, New Jersey on March 3, 1773. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1794 and soon entered into medical practice in his hometown of Morristown. He was also active in politics, serving as a member of the New Jersey Assembly from 1805-1810, the final two years of which he was Speaker; as a U.S. Congressman from 1811-1833; and from 1837-1838 again as speaker of the Assembly. Condict married Martha Woodhull (1781-1820), and after her death, Martina Elmendorf (1784-1851). He had a total of eleven children. Lewis Condict died on May 26, 1862 in Morristown, New Jersey.
