Clifton Bledsoe Cates (1893-1970) was born in Tiptonville, Tennessee. He received his commission in 1917 and was twice wounded while serving with 6th Marines in the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. He rose to the rank of brigadier general in April 1940, and major general in February 1944. He served as Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1984 to 1952. He retired from Marine Corps service in July 1954.
