Variant namesGerman-American, born at Frankfort-on the-Main, Germany, attended the University of Munich and Heidelberg, where he became a lawyer and after being wounded in a political uprising in 1838, escaped to France, then came to America where he settled in Belleville, Illinois, practiced law, was elected to the legislature in 1842, was appointed to the state Supreme Court in 1845, elected Lieutenant Governor of Illinois in 1852 and served in the Civil War until illness forced him to resign in 1862.
