Matt Urban, Cornell University Class of 1941, born and raised in Buffalo, NY, was the most highly decorated U.S. combat veteran of World War II. He was awarded twenty-nine medals for bravery, served twenty months in front line action, was wounded seven times in separate engagements, and fought in six major campaigns in Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, France, and Belgium. He received battlefield promotions and rose in rank from Lieutenant to Lieutenant Colonel, commanding the 2nd Battalion of the 60th Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division. He died on March 4, 1995 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
