Shumway, Samuel A., 1830-1913

Samuel A. Shumway was born August 18, 1831 in Massachusetts, son of Alpheus Shumway and Phila Marsh. He sailed to California from New York aboard the Prometheus on December 5, 1852 and must have traveled via the Isthmus if Panama, since he arrived in San Francisco on January 7, 1853. Shumway subsequently engaged in mining in the Coloma and Georgetown areas. He returned to Massachusetts at an unknown date, married Lucinda Jeanette Stoddard, and served in the 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery Regiment during the Civil War. Shumway married his second wife, Anna Congdon Holmes, on August 16, 1870, and died in Massachusetts in 1913.

Samuel A. Shumway was 34 years old and working at a forge in Fiskdale, Mass., when he was mustered into Company A of the 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery Regiment on 31 August 1864. He was stationed with his unit on garrison duty around New Bern, N.C., and Portsmouth, Va., for most of his service. He was discharged at New Bern on 26 June 1865 and returned to the Sturbridge, Mass., area.
