Allen, quondam lawyer and Episcopal minister in St. Albans, Vt., taught languages at Delaware College in Newark, Del., 1837-1845, and subsequently was professor of ancient languages at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1863, he published the Life of Philidor, a book about chess.
