Variant namesIn 1954, Thomas M. Rees was elected to represent the Fifty-ninth Assembly District of the California State Assembly. He served in the assembly until 1962, when he was elected as Los Angeles County's sole California state senator until the senate was reapportioned in 1965. In 1966 Rees was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served until 1976. In the state assembley and senate Rees specialized in legislation dealing with metropolitan planning, social insurance, state fiscal reorganization, consumer credit, and rapid transit. In the House Rees served on such major committees as Ways and Means, and Banking and Currency. He also was a member of the "Watergate Babies", a group of liberal Democrats seeking substantive governmental reforms in the wake of the Watergate scandal.
