Robert Barnwell Roosevelt (1829-1906), writer, political reformer, and pioneer in conservation, was a founder of New York's Union League Club, and as attorney and influential Democratic Party member, helped to establish many social reforms and assisted in overthrowing the powerful Tweed ring. Roosevelt, a naturalist author, served as chairman of the state fishery commission in addition to other city and state offices. He was the uncle of President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919).

Robert Barnwell Roosevelt (1829-1906). Uncle of President Theodore Roosevelt, editor, author of "Superior Fishing, the Striped Bass, Trout, and Black Bass of the Northern States" (1st edition 1865, 2nd edition 1884), one of three New York Commissioners of Fisheries and member US House of Representatives 1871-1873 as well as Minister to Holland 1888-1890.
