Friedländer was born on Mar. 21, 1882 in Berlin, Germany; degree from Berlin, 1905; became Privat-dozent (1911) then Assoc. Professor at Univ. of Berlin (1914); in 1920 he became professor of Classical Philology at Marburg; professor, Halle Univ., 1932; forced to resign by the Nazis in 1935, Friedländer was detained in a concentration camp in 1938 before coming to the US; taught briefly at Johns Hopkins Univ. before coming to UCLA in 1940; became professor of Latin and Greek in 1945; after four years was retired and made emeritus; he died on Dec. 10, 1968.
