Evans, F. W. (Frederick William), 1808-1893

Frederick W. Evans was born in Leominster, England, in 1808. Along with his brother, George Henry, and his father he emigrated to the United States in 1820, settling in Binghamton, New York. Evans pursued studies in philosophy and literature and with his brother issued a number of working class publications which advocated land rights, the end of imprisonment for debt, equality for women, the abolition of slavery, Sunday mail delivery, and other social causes. Evans joined the Shakers at New Lebanon in 1830. He rose in prominence in the North Family at New Lebanon and soon became a spokesperson for the Shakers, promoting modernization of the Shaker sect and rapport with the outside world. Evans served as an Elder and was a prolific author and lecturer, writing scores of publications and delivering many talks throughout the years. He died in 1893, after having been a Shaker for more than 60 years.

F. W. Evans was born in Worcestershire, Eng. and came to the United States in 1820. He became a member of the Owenite community in Massillon, Ohio in 1828. Evans edited and published the Working Man's Advocate, the Daily Sentinel, and Young America. He became a Shaker in 1830 and remained until his death. Evans was the most prolific of Shaker writers.
