Second Lieutenant Harold Bascom Durham Jr., also known by the nickname Pinky, was born on October 12, 1942 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He enlisted in the Army in 1964 and by October 17, 1967 he was serving as a Second Lieutenant in Battery C, 6th Battalion, 15th Artillery Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. During the Battle of Ong Thanh, Durham repeatedly exposed himself three times to hostile fire in order to serve as forward observer for both Company D and Company A. He was wounded in each of these acts of heroism and died as a result of these injuries. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.
