(Glastechnischen Laboratoriums Schott & Gen.), in 1884, in Jena with Ernst Abbe and Carl and Roderich Zeiss. Inventor of new optical glass types, new thermometer glass and Borosilicate glass. Founder of modern glass technology (and the German Glass Technological Society, 1925). Ernst Abbe (1840-1905), physicist and social reformer, is known as the founder of theoretical optics; in 1889 he also established the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung (Foundation).
