Annie L. Butler was born in New Hope, Alabama, on September 21, 1920, to Mr. and Mrs. George Butler. She had one sister and one brother. She attended Alabama College and graduated in 1943 with a B.S. in Home Economics, and went on to attend State University of Iowa, where she graduated with an M.A. in 1944. Butler worked as supervisor of St. Cloud State College Nursery School and as Director of Nursery Schools at the University of Alabama. She completed an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Teaching Young Children in 1958 at Teachers College, Columbia University. During her doctoral work at Columbia University, Butler was the supervisor of nursery school, kindergarten, and primary student teachers at Teachers College and Newark State College, Union, New Jersey. Following her doctorate, she was appointed Associate in Child Development for the New York State Education Department, Albany, New York.

Butler began teaching at Indiana University Bloomington in 1960, and remained for 19 years, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in the School of Education. During this time, she conducted seminars and workshops and was a guest professor at several universities. A recognized expert in her field, she served as Professional Consultant for the President's Committee on Health Education for Early Childhood Programs, President of the Indiana Association for the Education of Young Children, Secretary of the National Committee on Early Childhood Education, and President of the Association for Childhood Education International. Butler authored several books, including one series she co-authored for the US Commission on Education titled Literature Search and Development of an Evaluation System in Early Childhood Education . She was also a frequent speaker at professional meetings. Additionally, she pursued two sabbaticals; the result of one, on the topic of futuristic early childhood education, is included in this collection. Butler died on August 18, 1979, after a long illness at Indianapolis Methodist Hospital. She is buried in New Hope, Alabama.
