Lattimore, Eleanor Frances, 1904-1986

Eleanor Frances Lattimore was born in China, lived briefly in Switzerland and came to the United States with her parents in 1920. She worked as a free-lance artist, author of children's stories and book illustrator, chiefly of her own books.

Eleanor Frances Lattimore was born June 30, 1904, in Shanghai, China, the daughter of American nationals. She grew up in China and came to the United States with her parents in 1920. She was educated at home by her father David (a professor at Chinese universities, and later at Dartmouth college). She studied art at California School of Arts and Crafts, 1920-22, at Art Students League and Grand Central School of Art, New York, NY, 1924.After art school she worked as a free-lance artist until 1930. From 1930 she became known as the illustrator and writer of numerous children's books, often creating stories based on her experiences growing up in China. Many of Lattimore's more than fifty titles were translated into foreign languages and transcribed into braille.
