Art historian, lecturer and critic. Educated at Sydney Teachers Coll. 1934-35; Uni. of Sydney 1945-53 (BA); Courtauld Inst. of Art and Warburg Inst., London, 1948-49; ANU 1953-4 (Ph.D.). His first major publication was Place, Taste and Tradition (1945), a history of Australian art. Compiled the first complete catalogue of Australian oil paintings in the AGNSW (1953). His extensive publications include European Vision and the South Pacific, 1768-1850 (1960, second ed. 1984). Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, and Society of Antiquities, London.
