Herndon, Thomas H. (Thomas Hood), 1828-1883

A native of Greene Co., Ala., Herndon began practicing law in the county seat of Eutaw in 1849. He moved to Mobile in 1853 and was elected to the Ala. State legislature in 1857. In 1861 he represented Greene Co. at the state Constitutional Convention. Herndon served in the Confederate States Army and was seriously wounded at Chickamauga and Atlanta. After the war Herndon returned to Mobile and resumed his law practice and political career. He was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for governor in 1872 and a member of the 1875 state Constitutional Convention. Herndon was re-elected to the Ala. legislature in 1876 and elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1879. Herndon served until 1883 when he died in office.
