Linguist Brent Douglas Galloway (born 1944 in Oakland, California) studied Salish languages, primarily Halkomelem, Nooksack, and Samish. His linguistic studies also included Gullah and Black English. In his research, Galloway focused on semantics and phonology. He also researched the complexities of computer processing for these languages. Galloway received his training in linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1975, he founded the Halkomelem Language Program at the Coqualeetza Education Training Centre in Sardis, British Columbia, which he ran through 1980. Galloway joined the faculty of the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College (later First Nations University of Canada) in 1988. He served as the head of its Department of Indian Languages, Literatures, & Linguistics from 1988 to 1994. In August 2008, Galloway retired from First Nations University of Canada and became a Professor Emeritus.
