Johnstone was born on Aug. 9, 1934. He earned a B.A. from Concordia Theological Seminary, and both his M.A. and Ph. D. from the University of Michigan in Sociology. On Aug. 31, 1969, Johnstone was hired as an instructor at CMU. He served as a member of the CMU faculty, 1969-1992, and served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, 1987-1992. During 1976-1977, Johnstone served as President of the CMU FA, the only time there was a serious attempt to decertify the FA. Several of his books are in the CMU Libraries. In 2003, Johnstone was retired and living in Ind. (Information from the donor's letter to the Clarke and other sources.).
