John Gauden (1605-1662) was born at Mayland, Essex. He went to school in Bury St Edmunds, and entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1619 (B.A., 1623; M.A., 1626). In 1630 he became a tutor in Oxford, and that year joined Wadham College (B.D., 1635; D.D., 1641). Gauden was appointed vicar of Chippenham and chaplain to Robert Rich, Earl of Warwick, in 1640, and became dean of Bocking in 1641. He was bishop of Exeter, 1660-1662, and became bishop of Worcester in 1662. During the Commonwealth Gauden wrote in defence of the church of England and attacked the army, but he was not removed from his benefices. He died on 20 September 1662.
