He was president of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), and was involved in the foundation of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Italian nuclear agency (known successively as CNRN, CNEN and ENEA).
