John Carlton Bicknell was one of Maine's famous early 20th century photographers, specializing in colored photographs. He started the Bicknell Manufacturing Co., also called the Bicknell Picture Co., with his brother Edward Alton Bicknell around 1903 in Portland, Me. The brothers had a falling out and Edward started the Bicknell Photo Service, also in Portland, Me. John Carleton's son, John Alfred Bicknell, closed the Portland, Me., studio in 1956 after John Carleton's death and moved to Westbrook, Me., maintaining the company on a limited basis until his own death in 2005.

Edward M. Marshall was born in Maine, August 1873. He married Bessie F. Haynes in Gorham, Me., 25 April 1899. They later settled in Westbrook, Me. He and his wife specialized in photography of rural western Maine and camps there.
