Native of Charlotte, N.C.; attorney with Robinson, Bradshaw, and Hinson. Served four terms on Charlotte City Council, 1983-1991. Two terms as mayor of Charlotte. Unsuccessful campaign in N.C. Republican gubernatorial primary in 1996.
