Batchelder (1856-1954) graduated from Harvard College in 1878 and from the Lawrence Scientific School in 1882. In April of 1886 he went on a European tour and remained until September of 1887. His principal pursuit in later life was the study of natural history, especially the study of ornithology, mammalogy and botany.
