Ramsay MacDonald in 1904, and after 1911 to Arthur Henderson; during the First World War secretary of the War Emergency Workers' National Committee; from 1924 secretary of the Labour Party, resigned in 1929 in protest against Henderson's domination; again secretary in 1934 after Henderon's retirement; retired from public life in 1944.
