Sir Rufane Shaw Donkin received his first commission in his father's regiment at the age of 5; he joined, with eight years seniority, as a lieutenant at age 14. He became a captain in 1793. At the age of 25, he became a lieutenant-colonel and in 1798 led a light battalion with distinction in the Ostend expedition. He later served in Denmark, Portugal, and India. In 1821 he became lieutenant-general and G.C.H. The rest of his life was spent in literary and political work. When Donkin committed suicide at Southhampton in 1841, he was a general, and colonel of the 11th Foot.
