Astronomer (astrophysics, X-ray astronomy, fields and particles); executive vice-president, American Science and Engineering (ASE), 1959-1973. He left to become Associate Director of the High Energy Astrophysic Division of the Center for Astrophysics (CFA) and Professsor of Astronomy at Harvard University. Giacconi stayed at the CFA until 1981 when he was appointed first Director of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STSI) and Professor Physics and Astoronomy at Johns Hopkins University. In 1981 Giacconi became Director of the STSI, managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy of NASA. From 1987 to 1988 Giacconi served as a consultant to Montedison, an Italian chemical conglomerate, as Chairman of the Board of Instituto Donegani, the research arm of the parent corporation. In 1991 he was also appointed Professor of Physics at the University of Milan.
