Wiese, Kurt, 1887-1974

Kurt Wiese was born April 22, 1887, in Minden, Germany and died May 27, 1974, in Idell, New Jersey. He married Gertrude Hansen (a realtor), June 26, 1930. He was a Freelance writer and illustrator of books, including almost four hundred books by other authors.

German children's author/illustrator, born in Minden, Germany in 1887. He moved to the United States in 1927 where he wrote and illustrated over 20 books for children and illustrated over 300 books for others. He illustrated primarily in Chinese brushes and lithography.

Kurt Wiese (1887-1974) was born in Minden, Germany. In 1909 he travelled to China, where he spent six years in the export trade. When war broke out he was captured by the Japanese and turned over to the British. A prisoner for five years, he was interned in Australia for four of them, and it was at that time he began to teach himself to draw. At the war's end he returned to Germany where he wrote and illustrated while working for an animated film company. He left for Brazil in 1923, and emigrated to the United States in 1927, already an established artist. A prolific illustrator, among his book illustrations are the 1929 Bambi. Wiese received Caldecott Honor citations for You can write Chinese; and Fish in the air.
