Appointed surveyor at Port Phillip in 1836, Robert Russell assisted Robert Hoddle in laying out Melbourne. He became a private architect in 1839 and an amateur artist.

Robert Russell, architect and surveyor was a member of a survey party despatched to Port Phillip in 1836, and made a plan of Melbourne which was later used by Robert Hoddle in his official survey.

Surveyor. Came to Port Phillip in 1836 in charge of the Survey Department. Together with Robert Hoddle, he traced out the outline of the town of Melbourne. He later practised as an architect in Melbourne.
