John Henniker Heaton was born in England and came to Australia in 1864. After working for some years as a jackeroo, he turned to journalism. In 1879 he published the reference work "Australian Dictionary of Dates and Men of the Time". He left New South Wales in 1883, and in 1886 began his campaign for imperial penny postage and for cheaper telegraphic cables. Over the next 25 years his efforts at postal reform were remarkably successful.
