Kay Smith, a native of Illinois, was a professional artist who specialized in watercolors and produced several works dealing with U.S. historic sites, landmarks and events. She is noted for producing an "American Legacy," a collection of 250 paintings that depict American history. She served as artist in residence at Millikin University and the Northwestern Military & Naval Academy (Geneva, Wis.) and was named the 1994 Artist Laureate of Illinois. Smith produced many major exhibits and received several awards from organizations such as the Municipal Art League of Chicago and the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge.
