Newton, A. Richard (Arthur Richard), 1951-2007

Richard Newton (1951-2007) served as Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, from 2000-2007 and as Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from 1978-2007. He made many contributions to the field, especially in the area of electronic design automation (EDA). Besides his roles as Dean and Professor, he was also the driving force behind the establishment of many research centers at the University of California, including the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), the Berkeley Center for Synthetic Biology, as well as the Synthetic Biology Engineering Research Center (SynBERC).
