Dr. Akhlesh Lakhtakia (1957-) is the Charles Godfrey Binder Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at the Pennsylvania State University. Lakhtakia was born in Lucknow, India. He received his bachelor of technology degree in electrical engineering from Banaras Hindu University in 1979, and his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Utah in 1981 and 1983, respectively. He also secured a doctor of science degree in electrical engineering from Banaras Hindu University in 2006. Lakhtakia began working as a professor for Penn State's Engineering Science and Mechanics department in 1984. His research interests include numerical techniques, optics, fractal structures, composite materials, chiral materials, anisotropic and bianisotropic materials, sculptured thin films, negative refractive index, carbon-nanotube electromagnetics, complex-medium electromagnetics, and nanophotonics. Lakhatkia has been included in Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and is a Fellow at the Institute of Physics and the International Society for Optical Engineering. He has worked as a visiting professor at universities in Argentina, Scotland, New Zealand, England, and India; has organized and presented at numerous conferences; has authored and edited books on topics such as optical engineering, electromagnetics, and nanotechnology; and has published copiously in academic journals, as well as serving as an editor and technical reviewer.
