The 184-mile Chesapeake and Ohio Canal operated 1850-1925 and is now operated as a national historic park by the National Park Service. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas used his influence to prevent the destruction of the canal. The Association's mission is to protect, preserve, and promote the assets of the national park, and it has a range of programs and activities to encourage the use of the park.
