Henry Thew Stephenson joined the Indiana University English faculty in 1895 and taught until his retirement in 1940. He served as the Chairman of the English Department 1919-1921. He authored several books and was a well-known scholar of Shakespeare.

Henry Thew Stephenson joined the faculty of the English Department at Indiana University in 1895. He took some time off to get a second bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1898. He remained with the IU English Department until his retirement in 1940. He served for two years as the Chairman of the Department from 1919-1921. During his tenure he was a charter member of the Phi Beta Kappa Chapter at IU which began in 1910. That same year he was awarded an A.M. Privitam degree, which was created in order to confer alumni status on non-alumni faculty members who had a long service record or held a high rank. He was also an author of several books and well-known as a teacher of Shakespeare.

Stephenson died in 1957 at the age of 87.
