Work on aging at the University of Michigan began under the auspices of the Institute for Human Adjustment. The nation's first adult education program for older people was begun in 1948 by Clark Tibbitts, then director of the institute. The Institute of Gerontology was established in 1953, in recognition of Iowa's responsibility to its people with relationship to the problem of an increasing number of older citizens. As a research and information center, its goal was to gather and disseminate material to local organizations which were engaged in planning programs for the aged. The institute closed in 1971.
