The Index of American Design was a part of the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project, which gathered information on significant artifacts in 35 states in the late 1930s and early 1940s. In Texas the effort was headquartered in San Antonio. Original watercolors of the artifacts were housed at the National Gallery of Art.
