Letter to Zacharie Astruc, 1867, January 16.

Letter from the literary critic Sainte-Beuve to the art critic and artist Zacharie Astruc. He thanks him for an article published by the latter in "L'Étendard" about his study on Horace Vernet. Sainte-Beuve explains his "ambition to expand literary criticism to anyone who writes -- painters, architects, naturalists, etc.," as he has done it "in the true modern spirit" with Vernet, Fromentin, Ramond, Viollet-le-Duc, and others. He ends the letter with a confession: "Le comble de mes voeus, avant de m'en aller, serait de faire un Delacroix comme je l'ai vu, connu, écouté et lu bien souvent."
