The foundation was created by Dr. Serge Koussevitzky in May 1942 in memory of his first wife, Natalie Koussevitzky. Its broad purpose was the encouragement of the growth of musical culture, and in the fulfillment of that purpose it regularly commissioned new works and aided in the development of musical talent through widely varied activities.
