Statesman and author who was one of the most powerful champions of Spanish Republicanism in the latter half of the 19th century and would serve as president of the first Spanish republic from September 1873 to January 1874.

Emilio Castelar was a university professor and politician, who wrote and fought for democracy against the Spanish monarchy. After the revolution of 1868 he became the executive authority of the First Republic until 1874, when the monarchy was restored.
