Novelist and academic Winfried Georg "Max" Sebald wrote Die Ausgewanderten, Die Ringe des Saturn, and Vertigo, parts of which are represented in this collection, with English translations by Michael Hulse. Although Sebald wrote in German, he lived in England for most of his adult life and taught at the University of East Anglia. He collaborated extensively on English translations of his literary works with Hulse, along with other translators.
