Variant namesLou Fancher was born in Michigan in 1960. She went on to study dance at the University of Cincinnati and work as a writer, illustrator, book designer, ballet dancer, and choreographer. Steve Johnson was born in Minnesota in 1960. He received his B.F.A in illustration and painting at the School of Associated Arts in St. Paul, MN. He works as a commercial artist and illustrator and began working as freelance illustrator with his wife, Lou Fancher, in 1986. Johnson and Fancher received the Minnesota Book Award for Children’s Book in 1992 for The Salamander Room. They are also known for their work in production set and character design on animated films such as Toy Story and A Bug's Life .
