a George Mifflin Dallas (1792-1864), senator from Pennsylvania and a vice president of the United States, graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1810; he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1813. He held a number of private and public offices, including private secretary to Albert Gallatin, Minister to Russia; lawyer in New York City; deputy attorney general of Pennsylvania in 1817; mayor of Philadelphia 1828-1829; United States district attorney for the eastern district of Pennsylvania 1829-1831; Democratic senator 1831-1833; attorney general of Pennsylvania 1833-1835; Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Russia 1837-1839; Vice President of the United States with James K. Polk 1845-1849; and Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Great Britain 1856-1861.

In 1856-1861, George Mifflin Dallas (1792-1864) served as U.S. minister to Great Britain. In spring of 1856 he entered the negotiations of a convention designed to settle the differences between the two nations arising from a British protectorate over the Mosquito Indians of Nicaragua, a Nicaragua-Costa Rica boundary dispute and the status to the Bay Islands off the coast of Honduras. Some clauses of the proposed Dallas-Clarendon Convention, particularly an article that called for prohibition of slavery on Bay Islands, caused much contention in the U. S. Senate. Although the Senate ratified the Convention by a narrow margin, Britain did not accept the proposed revisions, and the negotiations soon died down.

George Mifflin Dallas, a Senator from Pennsylvania and a vice president of the United States, was born in Philadelphia, Pa., July 10, 1792. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1810, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1813. He died in Philadelphia, December 31, 1864.
