Daines Barrington was an English jurist, antiquarian, and naturalist. Born into a distinguished family and trained as a lawyer, he held several important posts as a judge, and was admired for his writings on the law. A long-standing member of both the Royal Society and the Antiquarian Society, he wrote about antiquities, natural history, and other diverse topics, collected in his book, Miscellanies on Various Subjects. He wrote about his observations on the singing of birds, and an essay about the language of birds.
