Samuel Whitney Richards was born on August 9, 1824, in Berkshire, Massachusetts, the brother of Mormon apostle Franklin D. Richards. He moved to Salt Lake City in 1849, and served on the Utah Territorial Legislature beginning 1855. He died in Salt Lake City on November 28, 1909.

Samuel Whitney Richards was born on August 9, 1824, in Berkshire, Massachusetts, the brother of Mormon apostle Franklin D. Richards. He moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he married Mary Ann Parker in February 1855. Richards also served on the Utah Territorial Legislature beginning in that year. He died in Salt Lake City on November 28, 1909.

Samuel W. (Samuel Whitney) Richards (1824-1909) was born in Richmond, Massachusetts, the son of Phinehas Richards and Wealthy Dewey. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of 14 and ordained to the priesthood the following year. He did missionary work in parts of New York, Connecticut, Vermont, and in Europe, and served in the Nauvoo Legion. He married Mary Parker in 1846, worked as a carpenter on the Nauvoo Temple, and was involved in the creation of the University of Deseret. In addition he also served as regent of the university and served on the city council of Salt Lake City, Utah. As president of the European mission from 1852 to 1854, Richards edited and published the Millenial Star. On the advice of Brigham Young (1801-1877) Richards took two plural wives in 1856, Helena Robinson and Jane Meyer.
