Charles Negre was born on 9 May 1820 in Grasse, France. He was originally a painter and studied under Paul Delaroche. In 1844, like many of his contemporaries, Negre began experimenting with photography as an aid to his painting. He then began to photograph monuments, cathedrals, buildings, and landscapes, and eventually became known for his work in portraiture. Charles Negre died on 16 January 1880 in Grasse, France.
