George Rose Sartorius was born in 1790. He entered the Royal Navy in 1801, advancing to the rank of lieutenant in 1808 and commander in 1812.

Between July 1813 and June 1814, the Antarctic explorer James Weddell served under his command in the brig Avon .

Sartorius was paid off from the Navy in 1844 and he had no further service afloat. In August 1841, he was knighted and in July 1869 was appointed admiral of the fleet. He died in Lymington on 13 April 1885.
