Valeriĭ P. Semenov-Ti︠a︡n-́Shanskiĭ served prior to the Revolution as the representative of the Ministry of Justice to the Stolypin Land Committees and as Chief Procurator in the Senate. He spent his emigre years (1919-1965) in Helsinki, Finland, where he served from 1929-1939 as the representative of the Russian Historical Archive located in Prague. He was the son of Petr Petrovich Semenov-Ti︠a︡n-́Shanskiĭ, a well known scientist, explorer and humanitarian reformer.
