Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton (b. August 9, 1757, Albany, NY–d.November 9, 1854, Washington, DC); sometimes called "Eliza" or "Betsey"; co-founder and deputy director of an orphanage in New York City; wife of American founding father Alexander Hamilton; daughter of Continental Army General Philip Schuyler, a Revolutionary War general, and Catherine Van Rensselaer Schuyler; Van Rensselaers of the Manor of Rensselaerswyck were one of the richest and most politically influential families in the state of New York; family was among the wealthy Dutch landowners who had settled around Albany in the mid-1600s; very strong willed; met Alexander Hamilton in 1780 and married soon after; aided her husband during his political career; after her husband's death, she was left to pay his debts and founded the Orphan Asylum Society in 1806; relocated to Washignton, DC in 1848 to live with daughter; sought to preserve her husband's legacy; helped raise money to build the Washington Monument
