Summers, Hollis, 1916-1987

Hollis Summers was born on June 21, 1916 in Eminence, Kentucky. He received an A.B. degree from Georgetown College (1937), earned an M.A. degree from Bread Loaf Middlebury College (1948), and a Ph.D. at the State University of Iowa (1948). Summers taught English at Holmes High School, Covington, Kentucky, at Georgetown College, and at the University of Kentucky. He joined the faculty of the Department of English at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio permanently in September 1959, where he remained until his retirement in 1985. In retirement, he was named an Ohio University distinguished professor emeritus. Summers authored several novels, a half-dozen volumes of poetry, and numerous short stories. He also co-authored a textbook with colleague, Edgar Whan. Summers frequently taught at writers' conferences and gave lectures and readings both domestically and abroad. In 1978, Summers was a Fulbright lecturer at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. He also served on the Ohio Humanities Council. Summers died on November 14, 1987.
