Patricia Reilly Giff was born April 26, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York. After college she married, raised a family, and became an elementary school teacher. She did not begin writing until age 40, but since then her output has been prolific. She specializes in humerous books for middle-grade readers, exploring situations that are familiar to them. She has authored several series, including the Polk Street School Series and the Ballet Slippers Series. IN 1977 she won a Newbery Honor for Lily's Crossing a story for older readers, about a teen-ager's experiences during World War II. Patricia Reilly Hitt (b. January 24, 1918, Taft, California-d. January 9, 2006, Newport Beach, California) served as national co-chair of the Nixon-Agnew Campaign in 1968, the first woman to hold the post in either party. In January 1969, the White House nominated her as Assistant Secretary for Community and Field Services (CFS), Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
